Proteins

Think: Structure + Strength
Hair is made primarily from a structural protein called keratin. Chemical treatments, heat, friction, UV exposure and manipulation can weaken the fiber. Protein treatments can temporarily reinforce damaged areas and improve how compromised hair feels and behaves.

What proteins can help with

Hair that may benefit from protein

  • Breaks easily

Protein does not permanently rebuild damaged hair. Cosmetic proteins can bind to, coat or interact with parts of the fiber, improving its properties temporarily.

02 — Humectants

Think: Attract Water

Humectants interact strongly with water and help support hydration and flexibility.
Examples:
Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Panthenol, Sodium PCA, Hyaluronic Acid and Sorbitol.
Best for:
Dry, dehydrated or brittle-feeling hair.
03 — Emollients

Think: Soften + Smooth

Emollients improve the feel of the hair surface, reduce roughness and support easier detangling.
Examples:
Fatty alcohols, plant-derived lipids, esters, oils and butters.
Common fatty alcohols:
Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol and Stearyl Alcohol.
Fatty alcohols are not the drying alcohols people often worry about. They are widely used as conditioning and structuring ingredients.

Think: Lubricate + Protect

Oils do not simply hydrate hair. Most contain little or no water. They primarily lubricate the fiber, reduce friction, improve softness and help limit moisture loss.

Silicones

Think: Smooth + Protect
Reduce friction, improve detangling, reduce roughness, increase shine, support heat protection and limit moisture-related swelling.
Examples: Dimethicone, Amodimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclomethicone and Phenyl Trimethicone.

Conditioning Polymers

Think: Slip + Control
Damaged hair develops a more negative surface charge and positively charged conditioning polymers can deposit onto compromised areas.
Examples: Polyquaternium-7, Polyquaternium-10, Polyquaternium-37 and Polyquaternium-55.

Film Formers

Think: Protective Layer
Film formers create a microscopic layer that modifies how hair responds to humidity, friction, heat and styling.

The important question isn't "Does it contain silicone?" It's "Is this silicone appropriate for what the formula is supposed to do?"

Surfactants

Think: Cleanse
Surfactants help water remove oil, dirt, sweat and product residue.
Examples:
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine
  • Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate
  • Decyl Glucoside
Not every surfactant cleans equally. Cleansing strength, mildness, foaming and performance depend on the complete formula.

Clarifying & Chelating

Think: Reset
Clarifying ingredients remove accumulated oils, styling products, conditioners, polymers and residue. Chelating ingredients bind to metals and minerals associated with hard water.
Examples:
  • EDTA
  • Tetrasodium EDTA
  • Disodium EDTA
  • Sodium Phytate
Buildup may be involved when hair suddenly feels heavy, dull, coated, unusually stiff or waxy, or when curls lose definition.

Caffeine is used in scalp-focused cosmetics but should not be presented as equivalent to an approved medical hair-loss treatment.

14 — pH

An Ingredient List Isn't the Entire Formula.

Hair responds strongly to its chemical environment. One important factor is pH. Hair generally performs better cosmetically under mildly acidic conditions because acidity can help limit excessive fiber swelling and contribute to a smoother surface feel.
That is one reason conditioners and finishing treatments are frequently formulated on the acidic side.

Real formulas contain multiple ingredient systems working simultaneously. A strong treatment may combine reinforcement, water management, softness, slip and protection.
